What is ABA Therapy?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically proven approach that helps individuals improve their behaviors and learn new skills. ABA focuses on how behaviors are affected by the environment. With the principles of reinforcement, it increases positive behaviors and reduces maladaptive behaviors.
ABA therapy’s primary aim is to teach essential skills including communication, social interactions, and daily living. Each treatment plan is individualized and tailored to a learner’s unique strengths, needs, and goals emphasizing socially significant behaviors. ABA has been found to be effective across various settings, including the home, school, and community.
Although ABA utilizes many strategies, its main key element to ABA success is positive reinforcement. This is when a behavior is followed by something that is valued making a person more likely to repeat that behavior. The ABC model (antecedent, behavior, consequence) is a key tool used to better understand and shape behavior. By focusing on what happens before and after a behavior, ABA helps change behaviors toward more adaptability and functionality.
